Guilin in Three Days: Karst, River, and the Town of Yangshuo
The landscape that taught the world what 'China' looks like is real, and slow. Three days let you take the Li River by boat and settle into Yangshuo without rushing the view.
Three days among the peaks
Guilin's karst peaks are the image on the back of the old twenty-yuan note, and they are better in person because they go on for miles. Three days is the right measure: a river cruise, a base in Yangshuo, and a day to drift rather than tick boxes. The region is rural and relaxed; the plan should be too.
Treat the view as the itinerary. Most of what you came for is outside, not in a building.
Day one: the Li River
Take the morning boat from Guilin to Yangshuo — the classic stretch, with peaks rising straight from the water. Arrive in Yangshuo and walk the West Street area lightly; save the energy for the next day. The river is the day's whole point, so do not book anything that competes with it.
If boats feel crowded, the bamboo raft sections downstream are a quieter alternative.
Day two: Yangshuo at ground level
Rent a bike and ride the country roads between the peaks, or take a bamboo raft on the Yulong River. Yangshuo's best moments are unscheduled — a tea stop, a viewpoint, a village. End with the Impression Sanjie Liu show if you want spectacle, or skip it for a quiet riverside dinner.
This is the day to do almost nothing on purpose.
Day three: a slower exit
Use the morning for a short hike or a cave, then drift back toward Guilin for the airport or train. If you have an extra half day, the Reed Flute Cave or Elephant Trunk Hill adds a gentle close. Keep the last hours loose.
Guilin is a place people extend. Three days is a floor, not a ceiling.

Base in Yangshuo, not Guilin city, for the better views and calmer nights.
The Li River boat is a morning thing; afternoon light is flatter.
Bike or raft, not both, on day two.
Pack for humidity — the scenery comes with weather.
