Suzhou in Two Days: Gardens, Canals, and a Water Town
Suzhou has been called the Venice of the East for its canals and its scholar gardens. Two days covers the classic gardens and a quiet water town nearby.
Two days of quiet design
Suzhou is the city of the classical Chinese garden — small, composed, and built for slow looking. Two days covers two or three great gardens, the old canal streets, and a water town like Tongli just outside. It is an easy day trip from Shanghai, and a calmer one.
The gardens reward patience. Ten minutes in one is worth more than an hour in five.
Day one: the gardens and the old city
Start with the Humble Administrator's Garden, the largest and most famous, then walk the nearby Pingjiang Road canal district for lunch and browsing. Add Tiger Hill if you have energy. Keep the evening for a garden at dusk, when the light does the design justice.
Do not try to see every garden. Two is enough to learn the grammar.
Day two: Tongli water town
Take a short ride to Tongli, a preserved water town with stone bridges and quiet canals, less commercial than the famous ones. Walk, boat, and lunch there, then return to Suzhou or onward to Shanghai. Tongli is the rural sigh the city needs.
If you prefer to stay in town, the Silk Museum and a second garden are the alternative.
