Two days among the pillars

Zhangjiajie's quartz-sandstone peaks rise like a paused wave, and once you have seen them you understand why a film borrowed them. Two days covers the national park's Avatar Mountains and Tianmen Mountain with its glass walkway. The park is large and vertical; the plan needs to respect the climbs.

Come for the scale. Few places in China deliver this much geology per viewpoint.

Day one: the Avatar Mountains

Spend the full day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the Yuanjiajie section for the Avatar peaks, then Tianzi Mountain for the wider panorama. Use the cable cars and the Bailong elevator to save your legs; the views are the work, not the walking. Leave before sunset to get down the mountain.

Arrive at opening. The mist that makes the photos also hides them, so early clear windows matter.

Day two: Tianmen Mountain

Take the world's longest cable car up Tianmen Mountain, walk the glass skyway and the cliff-hanging walk, and see the natural arch — Heaven's Gate. It is a half-to-full day of height and nerve, best saved for your second morning when legs are already warmed. Descend and head to the station or airport.

If heights are not your thing, swap Tianmen for a second slow day in the park's valleys.

The park is huge; pick two sections, not five.

Cable cars are your friend — use them.

Weather decides the view; build in a buffer day if you can.

Stay near the park entrance to save transfer time.
